PRACTICAL GUIDE

Find Hidden Differences in Unicode Text

See code points, UTF-16 length and UTF-8 bytes to investigate invisible characters and text differences.

Inspect rather than retype

When two strings look the same but compare differently, paste the originals. Retyping can remove the very space, mark or combining sequence you need to find. The inspector displays escaped characters so tabs and line breaks are easier to spot.

Read the U+ notation

U+0041 identifies the code point for A. Supplementary characters can use more than four hex digits. The row number counts code points, while the separate UTF-16 count reflects the units commonly used by JavaScript string length.

Recognize combined characters

A visible symbol can contain multiple code points, including combining accents, variation selectors and joiners. This tool does not count grapheme clusters or assign character names. Use the rows to locate the sequence, then consult the relevant Unicode documentation.

Normalize only when appropriate

Normalizing strings may help a search or comparison, but it changes their representation. Preserve the original when debugging signatures, hashes or stored records. The inspector itself does not normalize or rewrite the input.
