PRACTICAL GUIDE

Sample Random Integers with or Without Repeats

Both endpoints are included.

Define the complete range

Both endpoints are included. A range from 10 to 14 therefore contains five integers. Count the available values before asking for a unique list; the maximum list size cannot exceed the range size.

Choose a sampling method

Allowing repeats suits independent selections where a number remains available afterward. Unique sampling removes a chosen number from the remaining possibilities for that list. These are different experiments, even when their bounds are identical.

Expect patterns sometimes

A random list can contain adjacent numbers, a short run or an outcome that resembles a previous list. Those patterns alone do not show that a generator is broken. Do not discard an outcome solely because it looks less random than expected.

Use an appropriate process for a public draw

The tool is useful for ordinary sampling and practice. It does not verify entrants, record witnesses or publish an independently auditable draw. A consequential selection process needs its own rules and records.
