PRACTICAL GUIDE

Split a Restaurant Bill Without Losing the Remainder

Check whether the bill already contains a service charge and what amount your group wants to use for the tip.

Agree on the amount being split

Check whether the bill already contains a service charge and what amount your group wants to use for the tip. The calculator accepts your chosen figures; it does not infer restaurant policy or local custom.

Keep the tip and total separate

On a bill of 120, a 10% tip adds 12 and gives a total of 132. Three equal shares are 44. Reading the tip figure as the final amount would leave most of the bill unpaid.

Reconcile rounded shares

A total of 10 split three ways is 3.333… each. Three payments of 3.33 add to 9.99. Allocate the remaining cent deliberately instead of assuming independently rounded figures always add to the original total.

Handle unequal orders explicitly

An equal split is convenient when the group agrees. If people are paying for different items, calculate those shares separately and decide how to distribute shared charges. Keep all amounts in one currency.
