PRACTICAL GUIDE

Compare Text Versions and Read a Line Diff

Put the earlier version on the original side and the later version on the revised side.

Start with comparable versions

Put the earlier version on the original side and the later version on the revised side. Reversing them swaps the meanings of added and removed. Keep the documents in the same plain-text format for a useful comparison.

Read a replacement as two operations

If a line changes from blue to green, the diff can show a removed blue line and an added green line. That does not imply two unrelated changes; it is how a line-based view represents a replacement.

Separate formatting noise from content

A change in indentation or line wrapping can produce many changed lines. The tool preserves those differences rather than guessing which ones matter. Normalize formatting intentionally before comparing if that suits your review.

Review the actual meaning yourself

A clean-looking diff is not a code review or a factual check. Read the changed context and test software changes separately. This browser tool limits each side to 500 lines so the comparison remains responsive.
