Average Speed Depends on Total Elapsed Time
Enter kilometres and minutes in the fields provided.
Keep distance and time consistent
Enter kilometres and minutes in the fields provided. Convert another distance unit first. A decimal hour is not the same as clock-style minutes: half an hour is 30 minutes, not 0.30 hours.
Use the full journey totals
For 90 kilometres completed in 120 minutes, average speed is 45 km/h. If the elapsed time includes a stop, that stop belongs in the overall average. A separate moving-time average answers a different question.
Do not average unequal segment speeds directly
Travelling equal distances at 30 km/h and 60 km/h does not produce an average of 45 km/h. The slower segment takes more time. Add the distances and elapsed times, then divide the totals.
Treat the result as a summary
An average cannot reveal peak speed, road conditions or the duration of individual stops. Use it to summarize an entered journey, not to infer safe driving behaviour or an exact arrival time under changing conditions.
