PRACTICAL GUIDE

Estimate Reading Time with a Pace That Fits the Task

Include the headings and captions that belong to the reading task.

Start with the complete passage

Include the headings and captions that belong to the reading task. A short abstract and the full article have different lengths. Remove material the audience will not read if you want a more relevant estimate.

Choose an assumption explicitly

At 150 words per minute, a 900-word passage takes about six minutes. At 225 words per minute, the same count gives four minutes. The calculation changes because the assumed pace changed, not because the text became easier.

Allow for difficult material

Equations, unfamiliar vocabulary, diagrams and note-taking can slow a session. An estimated word-based duration does not account for those demands. Try a timed sample of comparable material if you need a personal planning figure.

Keep speaking time separate

Reading aloud includes breathing, emphasis and pauses. Use a realistic spoken pace and rehearse if a presentation has a strict limit. The calculator is a planning aid rather than a measurement of understanding.
