PRACTICAL GUIDE

Split a Total in a Given Ratio

A 3:2 split has five combined parts.

Add the parts before splitting

A 3:2 split has five combined parts. For a total of 150, each part is 30. The two shares are therefore 90 and 60. Dividing by only one side of the ratio would give a different answer.

Reduce large ratios first

A 45:30 ratio becomes 3:2 after dividing both sides by 15. The simplified version is easier to read but represents exactly the same proportions. Neither side can be changed on its own.

Convert decimal parts consistently

For 1.5:2.5, multiply both parts by ten to enter 15:25. That simplifies to 3:5. Multiplying just one part changes the relationship and is not a valid simplification.

Keep units compatible

Compare like quantities or state what each part means. When dividing money or indivisible items, the calculated proportions may need a rounding agreement. Check that the final allocated shares still add to the intended total.
