PRACTICAL GUIDE

Hours and Minutes to Decimal Hours

Understand why 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours, and avoid common timesheet errors.

Minutes use base 60

A clock hour contains 60 minutes, while a decimal fraction divides the hour into hundredths, tenths or other powers of ten. Convert minutes by dividing by 60. Seven hours and 30 minutes is 7 + 30 ÷ 60 = 7.5 hours. It is not 7.30 hours.

Useful conversions

15 minutes is 0.25 hours. 30 minutes is 0.50 hours. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Six minutes is 0.10 hours. A decimal figure of 7.30 hours means seven hours and 18 minutes because 0.30 × 60 = 18.

Subtract breaks before totaling

For 09:00 to 17:30, the gross shift is eight hours and 30 minutes. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid break leaves eight hours. The work hours calculator keeps the arithmetic in whole minutes and converts the final total to decimal hours for display.

Handle overnight work explicitly

A 22:00–06:00 shift crosses midnight and lasts eight clock hours. Deduct a 30-minute unpaid break and the result is seven hours 30 minutes. The calculator treats an end earlier than the start as next-day; it does not model shifts longer than 24 hours or daylight saving changes.

Separate totals from payroll rules

Rounding, paid breaks, overtime and statutory requirements vary by organization and jurisdiction. This tool totals entered clock times. Apply the applicable payroll policy separately, and check a shift spanning a daylight saving transition using actual timestamps.
