PRACTICAL GUIDE

Convert JSON Records Into a CSV Table

Turn a JSON array of objects into CSV, with quoted fields and optional spreadsheet formula protection.

Start with record-shaped data

The converter expects an array of objects. Every distinct top-level key becomes a column, and the first-seen order is retained. Flatten deeply nested data first if you want separate spreadsheet columns instead of JSON text inside a cell.

Choose a separator deliberately

Comma-separated CSV is common, but some spreadsheet locales expect semicolons. Tab-separated output is useful for pasting into cells. Fields containing the separator, a quote or a line break are quoted, and embedded quotes are doubled.

Review spreadsheet formulas

Spreadsheet programs can interpret text beginning with an equals sign or another formula prefix. The default adds an apostrophe to suspicious string cells, including column names. This changes their raw text. Review the resulting file and its import settings before opening untrusted data.

Preserve identifiers and missing values

Quote long numeric identifiers in the original JSON so JavaScript does not round them. Null and missing fields both become empty CSV cells, so their original distinction is lost. Keep the source JSON if that distinction matters to later processing.
